Sua madre è peruviana e suo padre è scozzese. E’ cresciuto a Trinidad e Tobago, in Scozia.
E’ stato cacciato dalla Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama prima di entrare al Glasgow Citizens Theatre, dove ha recitato per molti anni. Ha anche recitato con la Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre, The Almeida, Liverpool Playhouse, Babel Theatre Company, 7:84 Theatre Company (Scotland), per dirne alcuni.
Il suo provino per Lost (2004) è stato registrato su un DVD partito da Londra e mandato a Los Angeles.
Ha ricevuto l’elogio speciale per lo Ian Charleston Award 1994 (Miglior recitazione di un attore sotto i trent’anni in un ruolo classico).
Ha tre figli: Elias, Lucas e Esau.
Parla scorrevolmente lo spagnolo.
