E’ cresciuto nel Michigan.
Ha cambiato il suo cognome in “O’ Quinn” dal suo vero cognome “Quinn” per distinguersi da un altro Terry Quinn, anch’egli attore.
Ha avuto ruoli in entrambe le serie di successo di J.J.Abrams “Alias” (2001) e “Lost” (2004).
Non è molto risaputo che è un chitarrista e un cantante di talento. E’ un fan in particolare del grande Neil Young.
Nonostante sia molto amichevole sul set, Terry si tiene in disparte con le sue misteriose abitudini, dai suoi colleghi più giovani in Lost, che spesso organizzano delle feste quando non sono impegnati a girare. Possiede questa “aura” enigmatica tanto che i suoi colleghi lo rispettano in modo molto simile a come rispettano il suo misterioso personaggio Locke.
E’ stato uno dei pochi del cast di Lost che non ha fatto un’ audizione, in quanto il suo ex collaboratore (da “Alias”) J.J.Abrams ha pensato a lui per la parte di Locke prima che l’attore si proponesse.
Si è laureato alla University of Iowa a Iowa City, Iowa.
E’ apparso in due differenti serie televisive con lo stesso nome di episodio. Sia “Millennium” (1996/I) che “Lost” (2004) hanno avuto due episodi con O’Quinn chiamati “Walkabout”.
In un episodio di Lost, i genitori del suo personaggio Locke erano Kevin Tighe e Swoosie Kurtz, che sono più grandi di soli otto anni.
Ha imparato come si lanciano i coltelli grazie al suo ruolo in Lost.
Suo fratello, Thomas Anthony Quinn, è anche lui un attore, che recita e insegna teatro nell’Illinois.
